Over this half term we will begin to dicsover the different types of rocks and how they are formed. We will have the opportunity to comapre and group rocks based on their appearance and simple properties. The children will also learn about how soil is formed, investigating the permeability of different types of soil.

Investigating Rocks

Today we learnt about the different properties of rocks which are:

Hard or soft

Permeable or impermeable

We decided to test a variety of different rocks to compare their permeability and density. We used a tank filled with water to test how dense different rocks were finding that pumice was the least dense. We then poured water over different rocks to see how permeable they were.

2nd November 2017

Today we began to explore the different types of rocks and know that there are 3 different types, learning how each are formed.

  • Igneous rocks are formed when hot magma cools and hardnes.
  • Sedimentary rocks ar formed when small bits of rocks are transported through rivers to the ocean bed. Over time as more layers pile up and press down on the lower layers. The rock become cemented togther forming a soild layer.
  • Metamorphic rocks start out as either Igneous or Sedimentary rocks. When the rocks are near hot magma they heat up, which changes the chemicals inside the rock before cooling it down again.
